Trenton Webster is first murder victim in October; murder count still on pace to finish below 100 for first time in 16 years

By Aaron Humes: As Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa reminded reporters on Friday, one murder is too many, even if it can be prevented.

However, Thursday night’s killing of Rasta Street resident Trenton Webster is the first confirmed murder in the month of October, the first occurring in Belize City since the execution of Orel Leslie on August 27 and first in the Belize District since the killing of David Philips at the John Smith Link Road in September.

This makes 69 murders for the year, well below the pace set in 2022.

Musa told reporters on Friday that a motive appears to have been identified as well as a suspect: “As I understand it the police do have a suspect that they were looking for. Apparently, it came to this point because of an argument between the deceased and this particular gentleman. So, the police will be doing its work to ensure that justice prevails and they make an arrest in this situation.”

Minister Musa made sure to compliment the work of police and the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) for slowing gang-related murders, with several flash points such Leslie’s murder and the recent attack on alleged Corozal gang figure Jose Matus in gang territory in Lake Independence not producing retaliations such as they might previously have. But that work is never done, he continued: “While it is we are on track to have a record low year in the number of murders, since 2007, at the same time we have to be on our guard at all times. We have to be able to solve this particular murder.”

Police investigations into Webster’s murder continue.
