Belize to be drenched by rain from tropical depression this week; CEMO says be prepared for flooding

Posted: Monday, October 23, 2023. 8:16 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Central Emergency Management Organization (CEMO) has issued notice that Belize and Belize City can expect heavy rains for the rest of this week from an organized area of low pressure in the southwestern Caribbean Sea that earlier this afternoon became a tropical depression.

Here in Belize, CEMO says up to an inch of rainfall can be expected between Monday and Tuesday, increasing to up to three inches by Thursday and possibly a further inch on Friday.

Residents, especially in flood-prone areas, are asked to begin preparations in advance of the weather and stay tuned to latest updates from CEMO, the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and the National Meteorological Service (NMS).

The U.S. National Hurricane Center advises that as of 3 p.m. Belize time, the center of Tropical Depression Twenty-One was located near latitude 11.6 North, longitude 83.5 West, about 35 miles east of Bluefields, Nicaragua. The depression is moving toward the west near 5 miles per hour and a west to west-northwest motion is expected until it dissipates.

Maximum sustained winds are near 30 miles per hour with higher gusts. No strengthening is expected as the depression will be inland soon. Dissipation is likely to occur tomorrow, Tuesday. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1007 millibars (29.74 inches).
