ComPol says he can’t fault San Pedro Police for not stopping mass shooting; issues warning on ‘wet drop’ drugs in North Ambergris

By Aaron Humes: Last July, Senior Superintendent Alejandro Cowo was moved to Officer Commanding Coastal Executive Office, in charge of crime-fighting on the islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, replacing ex-O.C. Christopher Noble, who is now a co-deputy officer commanding Eastern Division.

According to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, SSP Cowo has taken up right where Noble left off in keeping the tourist destination safe, save for the murder of American tourist J’Bria Bowens in December and assorted minor shooting incidents and other crimes.

Will the weekend triple murder as well as a reported rape of a woman on the island in the presence of her daughter following a break-in prompt a change? The Commissioner said the factors behind this incident appear to be specific and nothing short of prior intelligence might have helped prevent it.

On the issue of drugs on the island, the Commissioner noted that a Forward Operating Base had been set up in North Ambergris Caye, joining one set up by the Coast Guard, and that two vessels owned by Police conduct regular patrols in the lagoon area and off the coast. As a result of those operations, the Commissioner said, drugs have been regularly recovered: “…on numerous occasions, police have found parcels of drugs in that channel on North Ambergris Caye and those drugs have always revealed to be cocaine except for one instance where the parcel was cannabis. But we constantly patrol along that area, targeting the playadors, all in a view to prevent them from walking the beach and looking for drugs. But the police cannot live on the beaches and they will take [the] opportunity when police [are] not patrolling, to go and search.”

With plane tracks now much more closely monitored, drug traffickers are turning to the sea as a method of getting drugs to the Mexican mainland and ultimately to the United States. In the case of Sunday’s mass shooting, it appears to have been sparked by an entire bale of cocaine that was found which sparked a quarrel.

For that reason, the Commissioner appealed to residents of the island and wherever drugs wash up to leave the ‘white gold’ alone: “That is going to pose a serious problem. I want to appeal to people, whenever you find these drugs, please surrender it to the police. Keeping it and trying to dispose of it only bring problems to you and your family and I don’t think your life worth a couple kilos of cocaine, it [isn’t] worth that.”
