Tragedy in San Pedro: Three dead, four wounded in late-night shooting

By Horace Palacio: In a chilling incident in the San Pedrito area of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, the community was left in shock as a shooting incident resulted in three deaths, with four others critically injured.

In the early hours of Monday, October 23rd, 2023, around 12:05am, San Pedro Police, responding to reports of a shooting, rushed to the San Pedro Polyclinic. There, they found four injured male individuals with gunshot wounds:

Jose Hernandez, 31, a construction worker from San Pedrito, San Pedro Town.
Leonel Misael Cornejo, 27, a fisherman from San Mateo.
Ivan Ruben Guerra, 23, a construction worker from San Pedrito.
Randy Guerra, 19, also a construction worker from San Pedrito.

At the clinic, authorities also discovered the lifeless body of a three-year-old girl, Amari Rodriguez, with gunshot injuries. She was pronounced dead at 12:05am.

Following their visit to the clinic, police proceeded to the crime scene in San Pedrito. There, they found two more deceased individuals: Delmar Rodriguez, 25, a fisherman from San Pedrito, lying on an unnamed street and another man, identified as Carlos Chi OPU, in a nearby yard.

Preliminary investigations suggest that around midnight, Karla Cardova, her common-law husband Delmar Rodriguez, their daughter Amari, along with Leonel Cornejo and Carlos Chi, were returning home on a golf cart. As they turned onto a back street by the lagoon, gunshots erupted from the mangroves. Two unidentified assailants, dressed in black, opened fire on the group. Delmar Rodriguez, who was driving the golf cart, was hit and fell, causing the cart to crash. Karla Cardova soon realized that her daughter had also been shot and began to call for help. Leonel Cornejo managed to drive her and the injured child to the clinic, where Amari was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.

As of now, the crime scene is being processed by authorities with several expended shells found at the scene.

The motive behind this heart-wrenching crime remains unclear. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
