By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A group of six honey producers received new honey production equipment for their apiaries today, thanks to the support of the Caricom Development Fund (CDF) Honey Production Redevelopment Support Project.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise said the honey production equipment, which included hive boxes, smokers, beekeeping suits and hive tools, was distributed at a ceremony held at Centro Escolar México Junior College (CEMJC), one of the beneficiaries of the project. The Centro Escolar México Junior College is located in San Román, Corozal.
The other beneficiaries are another school, the Belize High School of Agriculture from Orange Walk, and four individual producers from the Corozal, Orange Walk and Belize Districts. In all, the districts of Corozal, Orange Walk, and Belize have two beneficiaries each.
The project aims to promote honey production as a sustainable and profitable activity, especially for women and youth, who often face challenges in accessing food security and income opportunities.
MAFSE said the beneficiaries should now be able to start their apiaries with the new equipment. They will be monitored and monthly.
