By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday held its periodical grains meeting at Blue Creek to discuss the current situation and challenges of the grain sector in Belize.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the grain-growing communities of Blue Creek, Shipyard, Indian Creek, Spanish Lookout, Neuland, and Little Belize, who produce soybeans, sorghum, beans (Red Kidney, Pinto, Black Eye), and corn.

The meeting had the objective of addressing issues such as pests and diseases affecting production, yields and factors that affect it, such as climate change, market access and quality standards.

MAFSE said the grains meetings are held before and after harvests to gather information for reporting and monitoring purposes. As part of its assessment, the Agriculture Ministry often includes field visits to the grain fields and storage facilities.
