Duo suspected of San Pedro triple murder arraigned in Belize City as Christian Espat’s sister establishes possible alibi

Posted: Friday, October 27, 2023. 8:41 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Due to a magistrate not being present on the island of Ambergris Caye, at 8:00 sharp this morning, police escorted Christian Kalim Espat and Michael Robert Alexander Brown off the island into the City.

It’s hardly an unusual procedure but Espat’s family in particular are aggrieved after they said they were told by police on the island that the arraignment would take place there. By the time they got word it would be in the City, occurring shortly before 10 a.m., they were too late and missed Espat being taken to the Central Prison at Hattieville.

Espat and Brown were each read three counts of murder for the shooting deaths of Amari Rodriguez, 3; her father Delmar and Carlos Chi; three counts of attempted murder against Jose Hernandez, Ruben Guerra, and Randy Guerra and three counts of use of deadly means of harm against Hernandez and the Guerras.

No plea was taken, bail was denied and the duo were remanded until December 28 when they will appear in San Pedro Town Magistrate’s Court.

Christian’s sister Stephanie Espat told our court reporter, “I am not only a witness to the cruelty that has been happening with Christian Espat, but also a witness stating that he was – I was with him the night the murder occurred. Sadly, it is a tragic thing that happened, but he is innocent. All of this was because it was not only one or two people that were with him. There were around five people that were with him that night who [could] state that he was in Chetumal. We were there with him [at] the hospital and we were at the hotel with him. We were even eating pizza the night that everything happened. My condolences to the family, but my brother is innocent.”

At the preliminary inquiry, if the matter is committed for trial at the High Court, Espat will need to inform the court of an alibi defense if he plans to use one.

Christian Espat is represented by Richard “Dickie” Bradley, who declined comment today, and Michael Brown by Leslie Hamilton.
