By Aaron Humes: On Friday it was revealed by Channel 7 News that Jasmine Hartin has yet to start her 300 hours of community service with the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), based on Fabers’ Road in Belize City – though not for lack of trying on her part.

Hartin was fined a record $75,000 for negligently but not intentionally causing the death by gunshot wound of Henry Jemmott, Senior Superintendent, on Ambergris Caye in May of 2021.

The presiding judge Ricardo Sandcroft issued the order as part of his judgment, along with the fine, the order to make a public service announcement about the dangers of gun use while intoxicated, and taking away any and all licenses for owning weapons. If all conditions of the judgment were not met within a year, Hartin was liable to serve prison time.

But nearly six months later, according to Hartin, she has been unable to make contact with the YMCA to begin as her email requests have gone unanswered. On the Y’s part, Executive Director Clara Cuellar told Channel 7 News that she knows nothing about the case, and therefore had no idea of the community service order. Furthermore, it is not clear whether the organization was consulted about the move.

According to Hartin, who is back in the country after a drama-filled but brief departure shortly after the case concluded, she will petition the court to vary the order to attend the better-known Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), which is also based in Belize City but has an outpost in Belmopan where she is willing to volunteer, or other community service-oriented organization.

Meanwhile, the Jemmott family has filed suit against Hartin for compensation for wrongful death.
