Belize Police in line for scholarships in Honduras, Colombia

Posted: Wednesday, November 1, 2023. 6:56 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize Police officers are getting a shot at advancing their training due to regional support for training opportunities obtained through the Commission of Chiefs and Directors of Police of Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Colombia, headed by Commissioner of Police Chester Williams.

The Commissioner says they have secured a scholarship for two officers to train in Honduras, and are currently deciding which officers are qualified for selection: “Yes I must say that we have good ties with many of the different police organizations within Central America I can say for the first time that we are getting scholarships from the Honduras national police for two police officers, to go to Honduras to do a bachelors degree in policing, and again that came as a result of my recent visit to Honduras, where I met with the minister of public security and the commissioner of police in Honduras, and we signed a memorandum of understanding, and so we’re now reaping the fruits of that visit so now we are currently looking or seeking nominations for two police officers, to go to Honduras and undertake studies in policing up to a bachelor’s degree.”

Commissioner Williams also mentioned that officers are training in Colombia in handling dogs as part of the K-9 Unit: “I’m also grateful that Colombia also recently gave us two scholarships for two police officers from the K-9 unit to go and do horses in Colombia in dog handling and also with, but we got to extremely good Canines that are in a part of our canine unit in Belize and so we are getting great corporation from our neighboring countries, and we are very grateful for that.”

As part of his presidency, there has been improved cooperation among the Central American countries (El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica) as well as Mexico. These are all countries along the drug corridor where planes land and discharge drug cargo unless intercepted before they can reach the United States.
