Meighan brothers walk from aggravated assault charge after complainant drops case

Posted: Wednesday, November 1, 2023. 11:13 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The last criminal charges faced by brothers Ellis and Tyrone Meighan, originally from Banak Street, have been dropped after their accuser said he did not want further court action.

The brothers were accused along with 27-year-old Jayir Flores and 22-year-old Kenrick Gordon, both of Lakeview Street, and 20-year-old Jamal Brackett of Mayflower Street, of aggravated assault against Elroy Jones of Banak Street in April of this year.

But Jones had indicated from that point that he was not interested in pursuing the case; nonetheless, the court remanded the group to the Central Prison after arguments against bail.

Jones had told police that the group of men had aggressed him while he was walking past their residence that afternoon, accusing him of stealing a gold necklace valued at $2,000 that belonged to their sister.

One of the men had a machete and threatened to “push it in him” and he begged to be let go to get the item from the person who had, which was how he was able to escape. Before they let him go, they allegedly threatened to kill him and his relatives if they didn’t get the necklace back by that night.

Whether the necklace was ever recovered is not known, but it appears the matter was settled to Jones’ satisfaction as he informed the court this morning he would no longer proceed with the charge, leading to its dismissal.

Ellis, Tyrone and younger brother Shaquille Meighan were acquitted only a few weeks ago of the charge of being members of a gang; they insisted that they had each turned over a new leaf.
