NEMO says flood conditions possible tonight in Cayo District as major bridges, ferries closed

Posted: Saturday, November 4, 2023. 5:33 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has urged residents of San Ignacio and villages along the Macal River to prepare to move to higher ground as flood conditions may be possible overnight.

A broad area of low pressure continues to produce a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the western Caribbean Sea and Belize.

The Cayo District continues to experience heavy rains, which has begun to lift the levels of the Macal River. The San Ignacio low-lying wooden bridge is closed, as well as the Baking Pot and Xunantunich ferries. The Iguana Creek Bridge will also be closed shortly.

Residents are advised to continue to follow official information from NEMO. Stay tuned for weather bulletins from National Meteorological Service weather and periodic advisories from NEMO.

NEMO’s emergency hotline is 936. Stay alert, be prepared.
