BEL stresses safety measures amid severe weather conditions in Belize

Posted: Sunday, November 5, 2023. 2:46 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: In light of the severe weather conditions impacting Belize due to an area of low pressure, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is emphasizing the importance of safety precautions. The weather phenomenon has brought about persistent heavy rains, causing water levels to rise and resulting in floods and other related weather impacts.

BEL urges the public to stay vigilant, monitor weather updates, and adhere to safety guidelines during these hazardous conditions. Among the critical advice issued is the warning against wading into waters that may have electrical connections, which can pose serious dangers due to possible electrocution.

For those facing severe flooding, the company advises cutting off the main electrical breaker before evacuating to prevent electrical accidents. Residents are also cautioned to maintain a safe distance from downed power lines, which should always be considered live and dangerous.

Storm conditions, such as lightning and falling tree limbs, can cause disruptions to power lines, potentially leading to outages. BEL explains that the power system is equipped with protective devices that automatically shut down during faults to prevent damage to the infrastructure and appliances, and most importantly, to ensure public safety.

Restoration of power may vary; some interruptions may last only a few seconds before power is automatically reinstated, whereas others may necessitate the dispatch of BEL teams to identify and solve the issues. This could prolong the restoration process, particularly because crews are required to observe heightened safety protocols under wet conditions and are restricted from performing work on power lines during adverse weather conditions like rain, lightning, or anything that could endanger their safety.

BEL remains dedicated to providing reliable power service while safeguarding both the public and their employees. The company encourages the public to promptly report any hazards or damage to the power system by contacting the emergency line at 0-800-BEL-CARE / 0-800-235-2273, sending a message on Facebook, or reaching out via WhatsApp at 611-0235.
