NEMO advises vigilance in Cayo District as flood conditions threaten

San Ignacio at the Low-Lying Bridge. Water is starting to recede but bridge is still not passable.

Posted: Sunday, November 5, 2023. 11:16 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: An official advisory from the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) as of 9 a.m. states that residents of San Ignacio and villages on the Macal River should remain vigilant as flood conditions may be possible. NEMO also urges all communities in Belize, especially those in flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant throughout the day.

The San Ignacio low-lying wooden bridge, Baking Pot and Xunantunich ferries, and the Iguana Creek Bridge remain closed. The George Price Highway from Belmopan to Benque Viejo is open and passable.

Residents are advised to continue to follow official information coming from NEMO. Stay tuned for the National Meteorological Service weather bulletins and the NEMO periodic advisories.

Showers and thunderstorms over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Honduras, and Belize are associated with the remnants of the area of low pressure that has now moved inland over Central America. This system is no longer appearing on the National Hurricane Center’s tropical weather outlook, but it will continue to produce rainfall over Belize. Rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches have already been reported and up to 4 more inches are possible today and tonight.

NEMO’s emergency hotline is 936. Stay alert, be prepared.
