Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition meet counterparts for Children’s Parliament debate

By Aaron Humes: Belize’s maximum leaders spent the last part of their day this week with the young adults assuming their roles for the upcoming Children’s Parliament debate in Belmopan on November 10.

In a bit of role reversal, Children’s Prime Minister-designate Alexandria Mai is from Belize City and attends Pallotti High School, while Opposition Leader Carlos Nah is from Orange Walk.

Moses ‘Shyne’ Barrow posted to social media that he was impressed by Nah’s “knowledge, research, and zest. He asked very many questions about the bill they will debate and was open to my suggestions.” He added, “Although he seems poised to be quite the legislator his heart is set on being an educator for now.”

The P.M. had similar praise for Mai, calling her “bright [and] well-informed.” He added, “I always enjoy meeting our youth parliamentarians and especially draw inspiration from their views on national issues.”

Both men issued their well wishes for the occasion, with the P.M. noting that the date is also World Children’s Day.

The Leader of the Opposition added, “Parliament is our most sacred Institution; thus imparting this reverence to our children who are the future custodians of this hallowed Institution that governs every aspect of our lives is essential.”
