By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Every day, thousands of migrants from Central and South America leave their homes in hopes for better opportunities.
Migrant caravans trek through Mexico enroute to the U.S. border.
Prime Minister John Briceño says that many people migrate not because they just want to go to the U.S. but because of a lack of economic conditions in their home countries.
“We believe, again, that the US government needs to help us in Central America to be able to create more economic activities in the different countries so that then people would not see the need to wanting to go to United States,” the Prime Minister said.
In addition, PM Briceño said that Belize is appealing to the U.S. Government for assistance in setting up a migrant detention center.
During a visit to the prison, officials noted that detainees for immigration offenses are sent to the prison.
“We’re asking again with them if they could help us in setting up, helping us in getting the necessary resources and funding to set up a detention center in Belize, which would be more humane than to put them in a prison,” he added.
The Prime Minister says that these discussions are ongoing with U.S. authorities.
