Voting at PUP conventions in Twin Towns and Belize City done electronically

Posted: Tuesday, November 7, 2023. 10:20 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Information Technology Unit at Belize High School introduced electronic voting during the PUP conventions in San Ignacio and Santa Elena and Belize City.

Traditionally, conventions and elections in Belize have been done using pencil and ballot papers.

However, during these conventions, voters entered their voters ID number and proceeded to vote on computers.

This made the process faster and generated the results quickly.

Principal of Belize High School, Jamie Usher said that the program allows voters to participate in paperless voting eliminating ballots, pencils and ink.

“What we had were I.D numbers verified in a system, with your voter’s I.D. You came in, you went to an electronic station, a computer with mouse, or a touch-screen all-in-one computer, you selected your candidates and you confirmed your votes all electronically. What it allows the administrators to do: Mr. Collet Montejo, Secretary-General, Linsford Castillo, and Chairman, Henry Usher is instantaneous results, so the polls closed at 4:00 and at 4:01, 4:02, they had the results of all 23 candidates, the number of votes and then they got to pick the top nine,” Usher said.

In addition, Usher said that her team has also developed a plan that if there is no power, they would use a generator and in the event there’s no Wi-Fi, the system operates on a closed network, an LAN (Local Area Network) which does not rely on Wi-Fi.

Principal Usher extended congratulations to her team for embracing the opportunity.
