Welding & Non-Destructive Testing Program at St. Ignatius High School

Posted: Tuesday, November 7, 2023. 3:40 pm CST.

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for skilled workers in industries such as welding and non-destructive testing (NDT). Recognizing this need, St. Ignatius High School has taken the initiative to introduce a Welding & Non-Destructive Testing program on its campus.

The progress and significance of this program has cost over $120,000 Belize dollars, highlighting the collaboration between the school, industry professionals, and educational (non-profit) foundations like STEM U Foundation.

Today, Jarrus Mitchell, CEO of NDE Institute and STEM U Foundation, visited St. Ignatius High School to review and assess the progress of the Welding & NDT room on campus.

He was accompanied by Richard Reimer, General Manager of Midwest Steel, and Samuel Navarro, the Sales Manager of Midwest Steel.

Both industry professionals expressed their excitement and anticipation for this project, emphasizing the positive impact it could have on the future workforce.

Mitchell has been a dedicated partner from the beginning, providing his expertise in non-destructive testing and welding.

His frequent visits to Belize demonstrate his commitment to ensuring a successful and enduring partnership. This collaboration is crucial, as it highlights the significance of competency-based and vocational education in Belize.

Chairman of St. Ignatius High School, Luis Oliva Sr., and Principal Jeaneane Neal, have been working tirelessly to provide the necessary support for the Welding & NDT program. While challenges are expected, their efforts ensure that these obstacles are overcome, leading to many success stories in the coming semester of the academic year.

During Semester 2, students enrolled in the Welding & NDT pilot program will have the opportunity to engage in more practical sessions.

These sessions will involve shadowing and mentoring by welding personnel and engineers from both Belize and the USA.

This hands-on experience will provide students with invaluable insights. In semester 1, students performed NDT testing using the Liquid Penetrant and the Magnetic Particle Testing inspection methods to demonstrate their competency.

Welding and non-destructive testing play vital roles in various industries, including construction, manufacturing, and aviation.

In welding, skilled professionals join metal components together, ensuring structural integrity and the safe operation of machinery. On the other hand, non-destructive testing involves inspecting and assessing materials and structures without causing damage. This method detects defects and ensures the quality and reliability of products and structures.

The introduction of the Welding & NDT program at St. Ignatius High School in Santa Elena Town, Cayo District is offering numerous benefits to the participating students. By gaining practical experience and skills in these fields, students are equipping themselves with valuable assets that are in high demand.

With the rise in infrastructure development and industrial projects, the demand for skilled welders and NDT technicians is only expected to grow. This program is providing students with a competitive advantage in pursuing welding and non-destructive testing.

The establishment of the Welding & NDT program at St. Ignatius High School sets an important precedent for vocational education in Belize.

By aligning the curriculum with industry demands, the program ensures that students are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their chosen fields.

This approach not only benefits the individual students but also contributes to the overall development and quality of the country’s workforce.

The Welding & Non-Destructive Testing program at St. Ignatius High School represents a significant step towards bridging the vocational skills gap in Belize.

With the support of industry professionals, educational (non-profit) foundations, and dedicated school administrators, this program promises to provide students with practical training and valuable skills.

As the demand for skilled workers in welding and non-destructive testing continues to rise, St. Ignatius High School is leading the way in preparing the future workforce.
