By Aaron Humes: Former Minister of Works, Rene Montero, will be tried in the High Court on a charge of “willful oppression” contrary to the Criminal Code following a preliminary inquiry on Tuesday in the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court.
After a lengthy delay caused by illness on his part, and an Interpol Red Notice being issued for his arrest, Montero surrendered in June of 2022. The charge concerns the alleged use of public property belonging to the Ministry for his private and personal gain between 2016 and 2020, charges he denies.
The former Cayo Central area representative was represented by attorney Rachel Montejo. He will attend the next session of the High Court in Belmopan or Belize City as the case may be.
