By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Port Loyola had to fight for dear life to salvage a 3-3 draw against visiting and extremely offensive and determined Benque Viejo United on Thursday night at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City.
Benque Viejo United were off to a magnificent start as Owen Sosa scored in just the third minute of play. A shell-shocked Port Layola settled down and drew level in the 34th when prolific scorer Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton shook the net from a penalty kick.
Benque United responded again before the half through Ze Carlos Gutierrez who put them ahead 2-1 in the 45’+1. Not to be deterred, Port again levelled the score at the beginning of the second half when Sean Young found the net in the 49th.
But their joy was short-lived as Nahjib Guerra placed the ball beyond goalkeeper Charles Tillett’s reach just a minute later in the 50th.
Benque seemed well on their way to a 3-2 victory, but Steven Baizar denied them, leveling the match at 3-3 in the 86th minute.
Benque Viejo United nearly pulled off another win as they did in the first round when they won 2-1 in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday, September 2.
With the draw, Port Layola moved up to 21 points keeping the third spot behind Progresso who just have the edge on them by goal difference.
Benque Viejo United follow in fourth place with 19 points, three more than Altitude, their closest competitors. Altitude, however, have an extra game in hand as they haven’t played the back much against the Belmopan Bandits.
With two games remaining in the schedule, (three for Altitude), both teams are well on their way to the playoffs.
