By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes against Progresso is the hottest ticket in Sunday’s Premier League of Belize matches.

Champions and present leaders Verdes will be hosting second-place Progresso at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio at 4:00 pm on Sunday.

Verdes have 25 points and only need a point to secure their playoffs berth, although for all intents and purposes they already have in the bag, considering that fifth place team, Altitude, have 16 and the most they can make is 25. Should the Green Machine at least draw, they will be officially qualified.

Progresso, on the other hand, have 21 points and a win would give the much-desired ticket should Altitude draw or lose. A draw wouldn’t be that bad, but a loss could complicate matters, since only two games are left.

Third place Port Layola FC, who also have 21 points, are in the same boat as Progresso, but they have an easier opponent in seventh place Bandits who they will meet at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City at 4:00 pm as well.

Altitude, who have three games left because of a back match against Bandits, will visit last-place Wagiya at the Carl Ramos Stadium, Dangriga, at 4:00 pm. If they want to make the playoffs, Altitude better take advantage of these two games because their last regular season match will not be easy as they will be facing Verdes.

Other than Sunday’s games, the two Benque Viejo del Carmen sides, Benque Viejo United and Benque Police (Club Deportivo Benque), clash at home on Saturday at 7:30 pm at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium. With 19 points to their credit, Benque Viejo United are banking on another win over their cross-town rivals, who can no longer qualify, to draw nearer to the playoffs.
