By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belmopan Football Association says necessary disciplinary measures will be taken to deal with the open brawl that marred the Second Division semifinal match between Blackman Eddy Bulldogs and Valley Juniors at Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan on Friday, November 10.

Enraged fans and players punched and chased each other around the field and on the bleachers in a rarely seen frenzy of uncontrollable madness at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium. One of the referees of the match got involved in the fracas and was punched to the ground by players and then chased while many fans and players went at each other in a chaotic rage that is not representative of the civility generally shown at sports facilities in the country.

The violence was so outrageous that people who were recording and livestreaming the free-for-all couldn’t concentrate on any of the fights happening in the stadium; they just kept their cellphones moving from one area of the facility to another.

“The Belmopan Football Association (BFA) hereby condemns and expresses its deepest disappointment for the unfortunate incidents that transpired during the Second Division match on Friday, November 10, between Blackman Eddy Bulldogs and Valley Juniors,” the BFA said in a press release on Monday.

“The association is conducting a thorough investigation into the reported incidents, using several videos to gather comprehensive information. The BFA emphasizes its dedication to upholding the principles of sportsmanship and maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for players, officials, and spectators alike.

“While the investigation is ongoing, the BFA assures the public that appropriate actions will be taken to address any misconduct or breaches of fair play. Transparency and accountability remain integral to the association’s mission, and updates on the investigation and disciplinary decisions will be communicated promptly.”

The Belmopan FA said that it appreciated the support of the football community but asked everyone to remain patient while they conduct the investigation.

“The commitment to fostering a positive football culture in Belmopan is unwavering and the BFA is confident that the necessary measures will be implemented to uphold the integrity of the sport,” the BFA closed.

Last Saturday, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) said they are opposed to any type of violence in football adding their affiliate, the Belmopan Football Association, under whose jurisdiction the violent brawl occurred, would investigate and take care of the matter.

“Regarding the incident that is currently circulating on Facebook that took place at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium, the Football Federation of Belize would like to first state that we condemn any and all acts of violence or aggression,” FFB Communications Officer Yashmin Juan said on Saturday.

“The Belmopan Executive committee will be meeting to launch an investigation to determine the way forward in terms of sanctions and possible expulsions after which the FFB will be issuing a release regarding the matter.

“FFB will do its part to ensure we promote the values of respect, fair play, and sportsmanship.”

Following the Friday violence, the BFA called off the four First Division matches they had scheduled to play at the Isidoro Beaton on Saturday and Sunday.
