By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A two-day training workshop on the management and control of the blood-sucking bat, which is a vector of paralytic cattle rabies, was held for Belizean technicians by the International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health (OIRSA) in October at the Yo Creek Agriculture Station.

The workshop was part of OIRSA’s paralytic cattle rabies surveillance and control project, and it was facilitated by Dr. Mariano Arroyo from SENASA, the Animal Health Service of Costa Rica with the assistance of OIRSA expert, Salvadoran veterinarian Karina Maza.

According to OIRSA representative Fermín Blanco, the workshop included field trapping of the hematophagous (blood-sucking) bats.

Technicians from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) participated in the training.

OIRSA also donated trapping equipment for hematophagous (blood-sucking) bats to the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) and Costa Rica’s SENASA, as part of its Cattle Health Program that supports countries in the region.

On the third day here, Dr. Arroyo visited the BAHA diagnostics laboratory to see the BAHA’s rabies’ diagnostic capacity.
