Benque Viejo del Carmen area cattle farmers participate in cattle training workshop

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A group of 62 persons, including cattle farmers from the Benque Viejo del Carmen area and students from Mopan Technical High, participated in a transformative cattle training workshop on Wednesday at Water Hole in the Vaca Area of the Cayo District.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) the workshop was organized by Fernando Polanco, conducted by Frank Padron, Extension Officer of the Cayo District, and hosted by Gomer Enriquez, President of Canaan Livestock and Farmers Association.

“This initiative marks a significant step towards empowering cattle farmers in Water Hole, Vaca area in fostering a sustainable and thriving agriculture,” MAFSE said in a statement posted on social media.

The workshop included a practical session where the farmers learned about important aspects of cattle farming, such as vaccination, deworming, and nutrition. Dr. Andre DePaz, veterinarian of BLPA, helped with the tagging of seven animals that received black leg, rabies, and vitamin shots.

The workshop also featured a presentation by Reimers Feed Mill, which offered information on how farmers could access their quality products and services. MAFSE said this collaboration creates opportunities for farmers to improve their farming practices and outcomes.

Padron ended the workshop with a culinary session, which he has conducted in several parts of the country. The grilled lamb and beef demonstrated to the farmers and students of Mopan Technical High School, the value addition that farmers can achieve with their products. MAFSE said this activity not only increases farmers’ skills but also highlights their role as producers.

“Thank you for getting closer to our farmers!! We strive to make the Benque Cattle industry a robust one,” Enriquez said in a social media post.
