By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize High School of Agriculture (BHSA) in Orange Walk received 600 tilapia fingerlings from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) on Wednesday.
The fingerlings will be used for the school’s new aquaculture program, which was launched this academic year with a donation of three ponds from the Belize Marketing & Development Corporation last June.

The principal of BHSA, Abel Celiz, accepted the fingerlings from Miguel Sosa, MAFSE Aquaculture Coordinator.
The delivery was also witnessed by staff from the United Kingdom’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), who are currently in Belize to assist the Aquaculture Unit under the agreement with the Ocean Country Partnership Programme signed in March.
“Our educational system embraces new diversity in the agricultural field that enables our students to become prepared in resiliency in fishery and in an ever-changing economy and environment,” the BHSA said in a social media post.
“We are thankful and grateful to Mr. Sosa from the aquaculture department, and the fish experts from England for the delivery and for visiting our humble institution.”
The aquaculture program is one of the many agriculture activities that BHSA offers, along with beekeeping, vegetable farming, and chicken and pig rearing.
MAFSE also conducted a tilapia care and maintenance workshop for teachers and students at Belize High School of Agriculture (BHSA) in June.
The BHSA is in between the Orange Walk villages Trinidad and San Lázaro.
