Belize defeats French Guiana 1-0 in CONCACAF Nations League after late goal from Eugene Martinez’s header

By Aaron Humes: It seemed visiting French Guiana had frustrated Belize enough to secure a point at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan tonight, having the greater of the shots and possession on the field despite not scoring.

But six minutes into added time, Belize won a corner and Jovaun Ramos found the head of centre back Eugene Martinez, who scored the vital winner, not unlike the man from whom he got his nickname – ‘Pele’.

The Jaguars did the double over the Guianese after defeating them 2-0 in Cayenne weeks ago, and are now third in the group on the same number of points after Bermuda beat St Vincent and the Grenadines, our next opponents, 3-1 earlier today.

A win in Kingstown two days after Garifuna Settlement Day would put the Vincentians down to Group C and possibly set the Belizeans up for promotion if Bermuda and French Guiana draw.
