By Aaron Humes: High Court Justice Nigel Pilgrim ruled against accused murder suspect, 37-year-old Rodman Welch, and called him to answer to the charge of murder after rejecting his attorney’s submission of no case to answer.

Welch is accused of shooting dead Shakeem Dennison on October 12, 2020 near the Yabra Bridge in Belize City.

Justice Pilgrim was of the view that the evidence before the court against Welch to this point was not of a tenuous nature that would stop proceedings.

He had ruled earlier in the trial that Welch’s alleged caution statement be admitted into evidence and today he called him to answer to the charge.

Welch, after being informed of his rights under the law, chose to gave sworn testimony from the witness stand.

The accused testified that on October 12, 2020, he was at home when he got a call from a friend who asked him if he wanted some soup he was making  and he said yes.

Welch said he went on his motorcycle to his friend’s house accompanied by his common-law wife and minutes after reaching there, he was asked to give a young lady a ride to the bus terminal which he did, after which he claimed to have gone straight home.

At home, his partner told him that someone had just been shot in the area and that it would be best they stayed there.

According to Welch, on October 30, 2020, at around 1 p.m., a police officer met him and told him that he was wanted in connection with a shooting which happened over the bridge.

The police handcuffed him took him to his mother’s house where a search was conducted and he was asked did he own a motorcycle. The officer searched the yard, found a motorcycle and asked him if he had a key for it, he said. They then took the cycle and the helmet and he was escorted to the police station.

According to Welch, while the officers were at the yard, they roughed him up whilst he was in handcuffs.

The trial continues. It is being prosecuted by Crown Counsel Riis Cattouse while Rodman Welch is being represented by attorney Orson Elrington.
