UNICEF: 15 million babies worldwide born preterm

Posted: Friday, November 17, 2023. 2:05 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today is being recognized globally as World Prematurity Day.

UNICEF Belize notes that preterm birth is the leading cause of death in children under the age of five.

Each year, about 15 million babies worldwide are born preterm, that is about 1 in 10 children.

The day aims to raise awareness for the challenges of preterm birth and shine a light on the risks and consequences faced by preterm infants and their families worldwide.

This year, Belize is launching the Belize Newborn Action Plan 2024-2030.

This marks the first time Belize has established a plan to define national principles and interventions that are critical to newborn survival.

With technical support from UNICEF Belize funded by USAID and The Republic of Korea, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is launching the Belize Newborn Action Plan 2024-2030.
