By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize is on a break as Belize Men’s National Team (BMNT) travels to Grenada for their final Concacaf League B match against St Vincent and the Grenadines on Tuesday, so no games were scheduled for the weekend.

The BMNT should be back by Wednesday allowing for the back match between Port Layola and the Belmopan Bandits to be played on Thursday, November 23 at 7:30 pm at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City.  A victory gives Port Layola the ticket to the playoffs, alongside Verdes who secured their spot last weekend with the 28 points they now total. That’s because a Port Layola with 24 points has a playoffs ticket guarantee, given all possible permutations with the four games left.

If Port Layola win, two playoff spots will be left to be decided on Saturday night. If Port Layola lose or draw, and that is highly unlikely, the four teams that are closest to Verdes in the ranking, namely Port, Altitude, Benque Viejo United, and Progresso, will be battling for the three remaining playoff spots.

At present, Altitude and Benque Viejo United have 22 points while Progresso and Port Layola have 21, though Port have that extra game on Thursday pending.

The last regular season weekend will feature all games on Saturday, November 25 at 7:30 pm so no one team has an advantage. Altitude will host Verdes at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence in a must win for Altitude. Progresso and Benque Viejo United at the People’s Stadium in Orange will be the hottest match as one of them might be the one who fails to advance to the playoffs. Port Layola will host Wagiya at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City. Should Port win and they  secured a playoff berth, that would make the Wagiya game just a formality.

The fourth match will have Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) hosting Bandits Sports at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen. With both clubs out of the playoffs picture, this game is just for the records.
