Pok-Ta-Pok groups for World Championship to be held in Orange Walk in December decided

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: World Pok-Ta-Pok Champions Ek’ Balam Belize and Kinich Ahau, the two Belizean representatives in the 5^th World Cup of the Ancestral Mayan Ball Game Pok-Ta-Pok, are in different groups.

The Pok-Ta-Pok World Cup is to be held in Orange Walk from December 7-10, 2023, with the participation of 13 teams from Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, and the United States. Each country, except the United States, has two participants.

According to the draw held in Mérida, Mexico, and attended virtually by the team representatives, World Cup champions, Ek Balam Belize (Belize Black Jaguars), are in Group 2, the Black group, and Kinich Ahau (Sun god), are in Group 1, the White group.

Ek’ Balam Belize are accompanied by Honduras Gualcarque, Mexico’s San Pedro, Guatemala’s Ajpopab Tzutujil, Panama 2, El Salvador’s Kuskatan, and the United States.

Belize’s new team, Kinich Ahau team, who were drawn in Group One, will be playing against El Salvador’s Kuscatan 1, Panama #1, Guatemala’s Ukotzijal Ajpú, Honduras’ Ulúa, and Mexico’s Southeast Selection.

Each of the two groups will be playing a Round Robin. The top two teams qualify to the semifinals and the winners of the semifinals qualify to the final. The two losing teams play for third place.
