Don’t forget Belize’s issues, “Shyne” Barrow tells former leaders

Posted: Monday, November 20, 2023. 5:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In his letter to former Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Ministers of Belize, not only is Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow annoyed by the “one-sided” support for Palestine against Israel, but how the issue seems to have taken over local discourse at the cost of other pressing matters.

Barrow reminds father Dean, Said Musa, Godfrey Smith, and Assad Shomn that Belize City’s Southside is “under siege by violent crime” and that gang-related “genocide [is] the order of the day,” asking, “Is it ok for the Government to dismiss the genocidal gang warfare in impoverished parts of Belize City and beyond yet insert itself in a religious conflict that has been happening for thousands of years?”

He also cites “the humanitarian crisis in Belize ravishing our Cities, Towns, and Villages due to the highest cost of living ever and callous Government policies on social welfare that are inconsistent with United Nations best practices? Where is the cry for our people to get relief? Yet the Government is interfering in an extreme and biased fashion in selective foreign affairs while its home affairs are in crisis?”

Returning to the wider topic of Israel and Palestine, Barrow cites another former Prime Minister, George Price, who once declared, “Belize is a friend to all, enemy to none.” He suggests the act of suspending diplomatic ties makes an unnecessary enemy and asks his elders to “do more to foster a climate for diplomatic dialogue that will bring about peace with the State of Israel and Palestine living together in security and harmony.”
