Mennonite couple held after death of four-year-old foster child in Spanish Lookout

Posted: Monday, November 20, 2023. 12:11 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The community of Spanish Lookout, Cayo District, has been rocked by the reported death of a little girl aged four years old on Friday morning.

The child has been identified as Ayana Bennett, also known as Ayana Moody, and her body was found around 3:30 Friday morning. Her mother reportedly previously lost a child of similar age to gun violence in Belize City when her house was shot up. Her foster parents reportedly are being held by San Ignacio Police over this holiday weekend.

The child reportedly carried injuries on her body and a post-mortem examination has been scheduled for Tuesday.

On Sunday evening, community chairman Harry Letkeman issued a statement explaining that Ayana was brought to the community on September 7 and was accepted and welcomed by the entire community, which is used to taking in foster children in fulfillment of their commitment to Christ and to Belize.

He emphasized, “All children are God’s own precious treasures and are all deserving of our love and protection. This is what our community believes as central to our Christian faith and we express as a community our sincerest condolences at the sudden yet unexplained death of four-year-old Ayana Bennet (Moody). Our hearts are collectively broken and we express our sadness at her passing and share in the grief of her biological parents and family.”
