Manslaughter charges brought against Mennonite couple Marvin and Lena Plett in death of 4-year-old foster child Ayana Bennett

By Aaron Humes: Police on Wednesday formally arrested and charged Marvin Denver Plett, 43-year-old Belizean Businessman and Lena Plett, 39-year-old Belizean Domestic, both of Spanish Lookout Community, Cayo District, jointly for the crime of Manslaughter.

The couple are accused of causing the death of their foster child, 4-year-old Ayana Bennett, originally from Belize City, by lashing her several times with a belt over a 24-hour period.

The Pletts were reportedly trying to get Ayana to participate in a lesson about learning her colors. The child was found dead early Friday morning and a Post-mortem examination certified cause of death as multiple trauma by blunt force.

Charges were decided on by the Director of Public Prosecutions following the post-mortem examination conducted on Tuesday.
