By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Over 40 Toledo backyard poultry producers, mostly women, benefitted from a public awareness session on poultry diseases on Friday at the Toledo Agriculture Station in Elridgeville, outside Punta Gorda. The Toledo training follows a similar one two days earlier for 30 Stann Creek producers held at ITVET in Hope Creek.
The training session, coordinated by the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), the Ministry of Agriculture (MAFSE), the Ministry of Health, and the Belize Poultry Association, again focused on the One Health approach to prevent and control avian influenza and Newcastle disease in backyard poultry.
These sessions are supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations Technical Cooperation Program 3901- Agriculture Policy that focuses on seed, backyard poultry, markets and indigenous territories.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said the awareness session dealt with topics such as the overview of the poultry industry in Belize, an analysis of the Newcastle disease, and the features of Avian Influenza.
