By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) joins the Public Service Union of Belize (PSU) and the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) in rejecting the Government of Belize telephone allowance increase for high ranking government officers.

“The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) outrightly condemns the Government of Belize’s unjustified approval to increase telephone allowance from $250.00 to a whopping $600.00 per month for Chief Executive Officers, Cabinet Secretary, Financial Secretary, and the Solicitor General,” the NTUCB said in the statement entitled ‘Wheel and come again!’ on Saturday.

“This unjustified approval for the bourgeoisie is a slap in the face to Public Officers, Teachers, Doctors, Nurses, Police and other Security Forces, the marginalized struggling working class and every taxpayer. The spirit of ‘Todos Ganamos’ truly means ‘Todos Pagamos’ while unu full unu packet and unu belly everybody else fu pay and loose.”

The NTUCB said the workers organization rejects the approved increase and called on Prime Minister John Briceño and Cabinet to instruct Financial Secretary Joseph Waight to take back the approval immediately.

“The NTUCB stands in full solidarity with the position of the Public Service Union of Belize (PSU) and the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU). We encourage every worker and Belizean to get up, stand up and march against injustices,” the statement said.

The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) said on Friday that their organization also rejects the increased telephone allowances that should take effect on renewal of  contracts. The BNTU said that teachers, like police officers, have not had their promised increments restored and said a number of teachers are working without salaries being paid to them since the start of the school year in late August.

Like the NTUCB, the BNTU also demanded immediate action promising that if it doesn’t happen that the “Green Machine (in reference to their colours) is about to ROAR”.
