Court proceedings brought to standstill with reported sick-out by judicial workers

Posted: Monday, November 27, 2023. 10:33 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Various legal figures in the national justice system have been calling in sick today, grinding court proceedings to a halt, The Guardian reports.

Those involved include prosecutors, Crown Counsel in the Attorney General’s Ministry, Legal Aid, others in Government departments and Magistrates.

In September, new Attorney General Anthony Sylvestre gave certain undertakings as to addressing security risks, working conditions and increases in remuneration but has reportedly failed to come through. Those undertakings were expected to be completed by the end of this month.

One Crown Counsel interviewed insisted they were physically ill, but are also “sick and tired” of being “neglected and disrespected” and forced to work in “deplorable” conditions without “basic resources.”

The announcement of increases in telephone allowance for Chief Executive Officers and other senior officials has added insult to injury and is “unconscionable, absurd and cannot be justified in any way.”

Another said that attorneys in the Government’s employ cannot be too noble to take action, saying it is a principled and non-political stance.

Yet another said they had reached out to the teachers’ union and Public Service Union (PSU) – how many of those involved are members of any trade union is not known – and encouraged them to speak up on their behalf so that the Government remedies working conditions for all public officers, including base pay increases and warned that they will not relent until the Government yields.
