NAWL: Jewel Fury, Sagitun GIRLZ win first semifinal matches

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Amateur Women’s League (NAWL) Champions Jewel Fury and National Subchampions Sagitun GIRLZ won the first leg of the semifinal matches against their opponents at the FFB Stadium on Saturday.

Jewel Fury put up an enviable performance routing Caribbean Tire 10-1 in the nightcap. Elva Nunes, daughter of Progresso’s Brazilian coach Jorge Nunes, scored five goals (4’, 15’, 22’, 45’, 49’). Khalydia Velasquez was right behind with four (12’, 36’, 46’, 53’). An own goal by Shamirah Olivera in the 39’ completed the ten.

Daysi Paiz scored Caribbean Tire’s lone goal in the 30’.

In the opener, the Sagitun GIRLZ downed Napoles 3-2. Belsie Montoya’s own goal in the 20’ gave the Sagitun GIRLZ a 1-nil lead. Olivia Dacosta increased the lead to 2-0 in the 55’. Three minutes later in the 58’, Kenya Perez made it 3-0.

Napoles rallied their troops and scored two. Carlene Tillett converted in the 60’ while Marjorie Sanchez made it 3-2 in the 62’.

But as much as both teams tried, the score remained in favour of the Sagitun GIRLZ.

The second semifinals are set for the FFB’s Stadium on Thursday, December 7 at 7:30 pm.
