Five years later, Anisha Young remembered

Posted: Thursday, November 30, 2023. 2:12 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: On December 8, 2018, 22-year-old Anisha Young, also known as “Anny,” went to a work function on the Newtown Barracks. She was last seen alive leaving around 3 a.m. in a taxi.

Since then, efforts to find her, dead or alive, have been futile.

About three weeks after her disappearance, a shallow grave in the Maskall area was searched, and suspected remains were removed. However, DNA testing at two labs in the Caribbean returned negative results.

The family accused one person of involvement in a potential murder, investigated by activist Jose Luis Uc Espat, however, nothing came of it.

Earlier this year, Young’s uncle Nelson Tillett told Channel 5 News that this time of year is especially painful for the family: “When December come, da like – da lone remembrance fi my sista dehn. My sista break down, my ma break down. I breakdown. Like every year when December, like we nuh really have Christmas like that again, like first.”

He added that authorities would not allow his sister, Anny’s mother who now resides in the U.S., to obtain the swabs to be tested in the U.S. or to hire a private investigator and the Police’s investigation reached a dead end about a year later – though Espat publicly claimed police know who was responsible and botched the investigation to protect that person.

This evening in downtown Belize City, there will be a part-memorial, part-commentary piece curated by Briheda Haylock as part of the 16 Days of Activism, titled “Six Feet Down the Aisle.”

If you have any information on what happened to Anny, contact the nearest police station or 922 (Crimestoppers).
