By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A group of 20 agroprocessors participated in a food safety workshop on Wednesday in Belmopan. The training workshop on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) and its prerequisite programmes, aimed to provide the participants with practical skills and knowledge to produce safe foods.
The workshop was organized by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), in partnership with the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Ministry of Agriculture Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE).
The participants learnt about Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) to ensure consistent, high-quality production, Sanitation Standard Operating Procedure (SSOP) to keep a clean and sanitary processing environment, and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point, as a preventive method to monitor potential hazards throughout the supply and process chain to ensure the production of safe food products.
The HACCP is a widely used system often required for food production in many countries.
GMP, SSOP, and HACCP are essential for producing high-quality and safe foods.
This training is part of the ‘Building Export Ready Micro, Small and Medium-sized Agri-Exporters’ project, which aims to increase the competitiveness of Caribbean agroproducts and help Caribbean agri-exporters access regional and international markets.
