Six-foot boa constrictor lured out by midweek rains found run over, then chopped to death

Posted: Friday, December 1, 2023. 12:20 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Mid-week rains that inconvenienced residents of Belize City also brought out unusual sights such as a six-foot long boa constrictor, locally known as “wowla,” which met a rather cruel death.

The snake was seen crawling onto Mosul Street headed for Orange Street around 7 p.m. Wednesday when a vehicle ran over it. It survived but was so severely injured that someone put it out of its misery and chopped off its head, leaving it for dead in the nearby drain.

On Thursday morning, the Belize City Council Sanitation Department which was cleaning the area picked it up around 9:30. The snake had no head and from the looks of the scene where it took its last breath, there was a lot of blood left over.

According to one area resident, this is not the first siting of a snake in the area. The man recalled to our court reporter that about 2 days ago, another snake, much smaller than this “wowla” was seen in the area.

He thought that it was a baby snake and so its mother must be nearby, but is not certain if the dead reptile was the mother of that baby snake.
