Multiple earthquakes rattle eastern Caribbean; Strongest at 6.0 magnitude

Posted: Saturday, December 2, 2023. 1:50 pm CST.

By Horace Palacio: Several earthquakes jolted the Caribbean region overnight into early Saturday, with the most significant being a 6.0 magnitude tremor recorded northeast of Guadeloupe, as reported by the Jamaica Gleaner. The Trinidad-based UWI Seismic Research Center, which closely monitors seismic activity in the area, expressed concern over the frequency of these events. “Please note that our region is a seismically active one, and we can feel events in a short period of time. This is why we always urge persons to plan, prepare, and practice for any earthquake event,” the center advised in a statement.

The 6.0 magnitude quake, which occurred around 4:48 am local time on Saturday at a depth of 16 km, was felt strongly in several islands. The Automatic Earthquake Location from the research center reported that the quake was notably felt in Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, and Montserrat. Social media users in these areas, as well as in Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, and Montserrat, described the tremor as particularly intense.

In addition to the significant 6.0 magnitude quake, the region experienced several other earthquakes on Friday night near the same chain of islands. A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck near Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, and Montserrat around 11 p.m. local time at a depth of 34.8 km. Following this, a series of tremors ensued, including a 3.8 magnitude quake near the same islands at 11:13 p.m. at a depth of 10 km, and a 3.6 magnitude earthquake near St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, and Grenada at 11:01 p.m. at a depth of 5 km.

The seismic activity continued with a 3.8 magnitude earthquake recorded near Guadeloupe, Antigua and Barbuda, and Montserrat at 10:58 p.m. local time at a depth of 48.6 km. Shortly before, at 10:31 p.m., a 4.3 magnitude quake occurred in the same area at a depth of 7.7 km. Finally, a 3.8 magnitude earthquake was also felt near St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, and Montserrat at 8:17 p.m. local time at a depth of 80.6 km.

The series of earthquakes has prompted increased vigilance and calls for preparedness throughout the Caribbean, reminding residents and authorities of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activities.
