By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Second-seeded Port Layola defeated third-place Progresso 2-1 n the first leg of the Premier League of Belize Opening Season semifinals at the People Stadium in Orange Walk Town on Saturday night.
Gilroy ‘Bredda’ Thurton opened the score in the 27th minute for visiting Port Layola to take a 1-0 ahead of the homestanding Progresso. Shawn Young augmented lead one minute later in the 28th for a 2-0 lead.
Progresso, rallied by their big home crowd, fought back, but only managed to score a late goal by Jose Tinoco in the 85th minute to close the gap a bit so that this coming weekend in Belize City, they stand a better chance of overturning the Port lead.
The result gives Port an edge for the second leg at their home ground at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex this weekend, but Progresso still have a chance to overturn the deficit with their away goal in Orange Walk.
Port have the advantage going into the return match at home at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex this coming weekend, but Progresso have a better chance to overturn the deficit having scored that late Tinoco goal at home.
But it’s not going to be easy for Progresso as Port have won all three matches they’ve played this Opening Season, with previous scores of 2-0 and 3-1 in the regular season.
