‘Record sales’ caused lottery computer crash

Posted: Monday, December 4, 2023. 9:45 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Call it a ‘humblebrag,’ but the Government of Belize found a silver lining in the cloud caused by the disruption of sales for Sunday’s Lottery Draw, the first in seven months.

According to a release sent this evening, “While sales started out slow on Friday and Saturday, sales doubled on Sunday morning, causing the system to slow down significantly in the last hour and a half [before the draw]. Despite this, the turnout was overwhelming, with Sunday lottery sales surpassing the estimated average of $240,000 by almost $100,000 or over 40 percent when compared to previously reported sales data.”

The higher-than-usual demand caused the malfunction of the server feeding the nationwide ticket system and prevented hundreds of buyers from participating.

The Belize Government Lotteries Limited (BGLL) issued an apology and informed that a larger server is in place to ensure no recurrences: “Like with all new technology, it is expected that there may be some challenges in the beginning and sales distributors and sub-agents are still adjusting and learning to use the new system.”

But of one thing there is no doubt, the release concludes: “Boledo is back and bigger and better than ever before!”

Tonight’s Boledo draw went with no apparent hiccups and the winning number is 32.
