Belize Participates at the Fifth Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean

Belize was proudly represented at the Fifth Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean. The meeting, held on November 14th & 15th in Santiago Chile, brought together government officials, leaders, experts, stakeholders and youths in the field of Population and Development to discuss innovative strategies, share best practices, and foster partnership towards the sustainable development goals.

The delegates from Belize included the Hon. Elvia Vega-Samos, Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs; Ms. Dominga Cucul, an Indigenous Mayan youth; Ms. Ifáṣínà Efunyemi, Vice Chair, National Garifuna Council; and the UNFPA Liaison Officer in Belize, Ms. Tisa Grant.

At the conference, Belize contributed valuable insights and shared experiences about the country’s commitment and progress made towards addressing issues related to population and development. Highlighting the country’s advancements, Hon. Elvia Vega-Samos outlined the Plan Belize Medium Term Strategy which aims to promote a democratic, inclusive and sustainable society. She also discussed the government’s commitment to enhance social protection systems, gender equality, sexual and reproductive health services, laws supporting human rights, and legislation assisting persons with disabilities. The minister stressed the importance of leaving no one behind and urged the support of international partnerships to create meaningful change to address global issues.

Dominga Cucul spoke on the panel, “Progress and challenges with respect to gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights.” She addressed the urgent need for inclusive policies and education that include the cultural aspects of the indigenous communities and the importance of respecting sexual and reproductive health and rights of Indigenous women and youth.

Belize’s participation was facilitated by the UNFPA Sub-Regional Office for the Caribbean, in an effort to support Belize’s realization of the priority actions of the ICPD Programme of Action and the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development.
