By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Technical Officers from the Orange Walk Agriculture Department partnered with the Río Hondo Cooperative in Santa Cruz village in the Orange Walk District, to transplant vegetable seedlings on Wednesday, December 5, 2023. The Rio Hondo cooperative, which has 10 active members, planted a variety of crops, such as cabbage, cauliflower, sweet pepper seedlings, cilantro, string beans, cucumber, and others.

“This hands-on initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing agricultural practices and supporting the livelihoods of community members,” the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said.

“This joint effort not only contributes to the cooperative’s productivity but also strengthens the bond between local farmers and government support agencies.”

The aim of this collaboration was to support local agriculture and improve the livelihoods of the farmers. Extension Officer Desford Mangar and Cooperative Officer Francis Vega and other staff members of the Orange Walk Agriculture Department offered their skills and knowledge during the transplanting activity, advising on the best practices and methods for crop cultivation and management.

MADSE said the Rio Hondo Cooperative demonstrated its dedication to agricultural diversity and resilience by transplanting different types of crops. The Technical Officers ensured that the transplantation was done properly, increasing the chances of a good harvest in the next season.

This initiative is part of a larger effort by the Ministry of Agriculture to promote sustainable agriculture and economic development in the area.

“The Río Hondo Cooperative used to be the Santa Cruz Women’s Co-operative but after accepting some new members and undertaking an internal review, back in October, they requested and were approved to change the name to Rio Hondo Co-operative Society Ltd.,” Registrar of Co-operatives, Gareth Murillo told Breaking Belize News (BBN).
