By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Primary and secondary school students come out in Orange Walk and Corozal to welcome the Belize Women’s National Team (BWNT) returning from Aruba where they completed a six-game consecutive winning streak in Concacaf League C to qualify to Concacaf League A for next season. Even school marching bands were out to greet the BWNT.
The reaction to the BWNT’s motorcade gained more traction in Orange Walk as schools had already opened for the day when they passed through the country’s largest town, but the secondary schools students at Escuela Secundaria Técnica México didn’t miss the opportunity to welcome the BWNT and take pictures with them.
In appreciation, the BWNT members jumped off their vehicles and greeted the students along the way.
The welcome is part of a motorcade organized by the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) which kicked off at 7:00 am on Wednesday morning after the BWNT cleared Immigration and Customs at the Belize/Mexico border. The BWNT left Aruba on Tuesday via Panama and Cancun, finally arriving at the Belize border on Wednesday morning.
The motorcade passed through Corozal Town, moved on to Orange Walk, and was heading to Belmopan, bypassing Belize City.
Under the guidance of coach Wayne Casimiro, the BWNT’s six-game campaign kicked off on Independence Day, September 21, when they blanked Aruba 2-0 at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan. Four days later, on September 25, they vanquished Bonaire 3-0. They then went on two beat Turks and Caicos twice; 6-0 away at Turks and Caicos Islands on October 26, and 3-0 at home in Belmopan. The final leg took them to Bonaire last Thursday, November 30, when they bombed Bonaire 5-1 at Rincon. The BWNT closed off their perfect record dispatching Aruba 1-0 on Monday, December 4, at Oranjestad.
“Join the motorcade or cheer them on as they pass by!” the FFB said in a statement on social media.
“Bring out your flags and wear your red, white and blue!”
The FFB planned to hold a press conference after the motorcade.
