By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean judokas of the Judo Belize Federation (JDF) won one silver and two bronze medals at the Christmas Judo Championship in Monjas, Department of Jalapa in Guatemala on Wednesday, December 6.

According to the JBF, all three of Belize’s representatives won medals. Juan Card won silver, while Christine Moralez and Ishmael Castro captured bronze.

In the open weight tournament, Card got a bye in the first round while Ishmael Castro won his first match. The JBF reported that Card then entered the competition and dominated his first match.

“The second round saw a clash of Belizean fighters, with Card emerging victorious over Castro,” the JDF said in a press release.

“With three wins under his belt, Card advanced to the final match to fight for gold. In the final match, Card within 40 seconds got a Wazari (1/2 point) and with 1/2 point more to win the match, he unfortunately could not sustain the pain of a reinjured rib sustained during his previous match against Castro and was forced to withdraw from the final.”

“Despite the injury, Card’s performance throughout the tournament was impressive, earning him a well-deserved silver medal. Castro, who also delivered a strong performance, secured the bronze medal.”

The JBF said Christine Moralez, Belize’s first woman Judoka to compete internationally, won a bronze medal in her first judo competition.

“Despite just earning her yellow belt, she faced three heavier well experienced blue belts in the open weight tournament, showcasing remarkable skill and determination,” the JBF said.

“The tournament was a success, showcasing the skills and dedication of fighters from various weight classes. While Card’s injury was unfortunate, his silver medal reflects his impressive performance. Castro’s bronze medal is a testament to his own fighting spirit.”
