By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: During today’s Sitting of the House of Representatives, the Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology Francis Fonseca announced a historic decision by the Government of Belize.
The Government of Belize will assume responsibility for the FULL salaries and benefits of teaching and non-teaching staff at all secondary and tertiary institutions across the country.
This will take effect at the start of the 2024/25 academic year.
“Teachers and administrators, all teaching staff, will benefit from full 100 percent pension, salaries, and full-service benefits. And non-teaching, we haven’t forgotten the non-teaching support staff, [they will] receive full-service benefits,” Fonseca announced at the National Assembly.
Proposal 22 of the 2008 Collective Bargaining Agreement created by the Joint Unions Negotiating Team (JUNT) covered this item, as did the Government’s own Education Sector Plan.
