Sentencing today for ex-Treasury clerk who schemed to steal from Government – she will not face jail time

By Aaron Humes: High Court Justice Nigel Pilgrim will today, Friday, sentence a Belize City Treasury Clerk who scammed the Government of Belize almost $100,000 in 2019 and 2020 using the Smart Stream System.

June Belisle, who pleaded guilty earlier this year, will likely have to pay back her former employer but she has been told she will not face prison time.

The sentencing hearing began on Thursday in a virtual session with mitigation pleas from two witnesses and the convict’s own intervention.

Justice Nigel Pilgrim made clear the seriousness of Belisle’s action as the stolen taxpayers’ money could have been allotted to buy medication and school supplies for children, and she will have to pay it back, among other penalties.

Belisle, represented by attorney Ronell Gonzalez, told the court, ” I just want to give my sincere apologies for what I was arrested for and I want to ask you, as you make your judgment, if you could have leniency on me since I have no job right now so it will be tough on me to pay back a fine or whatever judgement you will hand down on me, but I am really and truly sorry.”

Before adjourning the matter Justice Pilgrim said, “The witnesses have made a profound impact on the court.” He told Belisle that she has a support network and it was a pity when she had her troubles she didn’t go to them first for help.

On Wednesday, November 3, Belisle pleaded guilty to theft of $91,639.58 from the Government of Belize.

The alleged victims Belisle used to execute what appeared to be a perfect scam were single mothers.

Belisle told these women that there was a financial assistance program for single parents and that the monies would be deposited into their bank account every end of the month and whenever the monies were deposited, they were to keep a small portion of it, then give her the rest.

Belisle then entered their names into the Smart Stream System as if the single parents were teachers hired by the Government.

In a caution statement she gave police, she attributed her actions to her financial strain she was experiencing at the time.
