By Horace Palacio: In a recent altercation in San Pedro, where two police officers were stabbed, the alleged perpetrator, Eric Bradley, has claimed self-defense. This assertion forms the crux of an ongoing investigation into the incident that occurred on Tuesday night, involving police constables Kerian Mena and Edwin Reid.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division, shared details of the event and the subsequent investigation. According to ACP Romero, both officers were treated for stab wounds at the San Pedro Polyclinic and have been released.
The police quickly identified Bradley as a suspect in the case. In his statement to the police, Bradley reported that he was standing on the street when he was approached and assaulted by the officers, Mena and Reid. Bradley alleged that the officers began to punch him, prompting him to act in self-defense, leading to the stabbing.
In a briefing with the press, the media asked ACP Romero about the weapon used in the attack. Romero confirmed that the police had not yet recovered the weapon. He also mentioned that while being treated, the officers indicated they were involved in an altercation but did not provide detailed statements at the clinic.
Further evidence in the case may come from surveillance footage. ACP Romero confirmed that there is footage from the area, which the police have obtained. This footage is anticipated to be crucial in shedding light on the events that unfolded leading to the stabbing incident.
Both Mena and Reid are attached to the GI3 unit, and the police department is conducting a thorough investigation. ACP Romero indicated that the determination of charges to be levied against Bradley would be made following the investigation.
This incident has brought attention to the challenges and dangers faced by police officers in the line of duty, as well as the complexities surrounding claims of self-defense in violent encounters. The community and authorities are keenly awaiting the outcomes of the investigation, which will likely have significant implications for all involved.
