By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Ek’ Balam Belize had to settle for third place in the Pok-Ta- Pok World Cup defeating Mexico White 45-39 at the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Complex in Orange Walk Town on Sunday.
The quest to win a fourth consecutive Pok-Ta-Pok World Cup came to a sudden halt earlier on Sunday when they fell 44-33 to the new Belize team K’iinich Ajaw in the semifinals.
Ek’ Balam Belize won third place in 2015 in Piste, T=Yucatán, Mexico and then won three World Cups in a row in Guatemala City in 2017, in San Salvador in 2019, and in Mérida, Mexico, in 2021. They were hoping to win at home, but their quest for a fourth Pok-Ta-Pok World Cup will have to continue in 2025 in Honduras.
Ek’ Balam Belize took an early lead but everything went downhill after that as K’iinich Ajaw settled and took over control of the match.
K’innich Ajaw later succumbed to Mexico Black 54-46 in the Final.
Mexico Black qualified for the Final defeating Mexico White 58-20.
Guatemala I’xk’at captured the first Women’s Pok-Ta-Pok World Cup defeating El Salvador’s Kuskatán 1. Belize’s K’iinich Ahau Women’s Team won third place with a 46-33 win over defeated Mexico White.
The Pok-Ta-Pok World Cup is organized by the Central American and Caribbean Ancestral Mayan Ballgame Association (ACCDAPM) with support from the Government of Belize through the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) and the National Sports Council.
